Editor's Note

Long before magical schools became a familiar corner of children's fiction, there was Mildred Hubble. She arrives at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches with good intentions, an unfortunate talent for getting things wrong and an extraordinary ability to find herself at the centre of trouble. That is precisely what makes Mildred such an enduring character. She isn't the most naturally gifted pupil. Her spells don't always work, plans go wrong and school life can be difficult. But Mildred keeps trying — and beneath the broomsticks, potions and magical mishaps, Jill Murphy created stories about friendship, confidence, perseverance and finding your place when you don't quite seem to fit. Funny, comforting and wonderfully British, The Worst Witch has introduced generations of children to the pleasures of magical school stories.

Why We Selected This Collection

Because children's books do not always need perfect heroes. Mildred Hubble makes mistakes — lots of them — and that is part of what makes her so easy to love. We selected The Worst Witch because Jill Murphy combines magic and humour with experiences young readers immediately recognise: difficult lessons, strict teachers, loyal friends, rivalries, embarrassment and the determination to prove that you are capable of more than people expect. Across eight books, readers have the opportunity to grow alongside Mildred rather than simply visit her world for a single adventure. It is a wonderfully comforting series about discovering that being different, imperfect or occasionally disastrous does not prevent someone from being brave, loyal and remarkable.
