Editor's Note
Pigeon does not need a bath. At least, that is what Pigeon would like everyone to believe. In The Pigeon Needs a Bath!, Mo Willems takes one of childhood's most familiar negotiations and turns it into a wonderfully dramatic argument. Pigeon has an answer for everything: the dirt is not a problem, the smell is perfectly acceptable, and there are surely much better things to do than get into a bath. But resistance has a funny way of changing once the thing we were avoiding turns out to be enjoyable. With wonderfully expressive illustrations and Pigeon's unmistakable personality, a simple everyday routine becomes a story about reluctance, persuasion and discovering that sometimes the thing we insist we do not want might actually be rather fun.
Because everyday routines can feel enormous when you are small. We selected The Pigeon Needs a Bath! because Mo Willems understands the comedy hidden inside those familiar battles between children and grown-ups. Instead of turning bath time into a lesson about cleanliness, he allows Pigeon to resist it with spectacular determination. Behind the humour is something young children will recognise immediately: not wanting to do something simply because someone says it is time to do it. The eventual change of heart makes the story especially satisfying — and particularly fun for families who know the bath-time debate very well.
