Editor's Note
George Orwell is often introduced through two books: Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. They deserve their reputation, but they tell only part of the story. Orwell was also an essayist, journalist, critic and observer of ordinary life. He wrote about poverty and class, politics and language, war and propaganda — but also about books, culture and the small details through which larger truths become visible. What connects his work is an extraordinary concern with clarity. Who controls the language we use? What happens when political power begins to determine what can be said — or even remembered? How easily can ideals become instruments of control? And what responsibility does an individual have when confronted with injustice? Across ten books, this collection offers an opportunity to encounter not simply the author of two famous novels, but the much broader body of thought behind them.
Because Orwell is one of those writers whose name has become part of the language. Words and ideas associated with his work — Orwellian, Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime — have travelled far beyond the books in which they first appeared. We selected this collection because reading Orwell directly is very different from encountering those ideas second-hand. His novels remain powerful, but his essays and non-fiction reveal an equally compelling writer: observant, direct, argumentative and deeply interested in the relationship between language, politics and truth. A ten-book collection gives readers the opportunity to move beyond the familiar titles and discover the range of Orwell's writing for themselves.
This collection contains 10 works by George Orwell, sold together as one box set.
