Editor's Note
We spend a great deal of time trying to predict what will change. Morgan Housel suggests that it may be just as useful to ask what will stay the same. In Same as Ever, the author of The Psychology of Money turns his attention to the patterns of human behaviour that persist even as technology, markets and circumstances evolve. Ambition, fear, uncertainty, envy, risk and our tendency to underestimate the unexpected are not new forces — they have shaped decisions for generations. Through a collection of concise stories and observations, Housel explores how recognising these enduring patterns can help us think more clearly about an unpredictable future. It is less a book about forecasting what happens next than about understanding the people who will be there when it does.
Because predicting the future is difficult; understanding human nature may be more useful. We selected Same as Ever because Morgan Housel approaches uncertainty from an unusually practical direction. Instead of trying to identify the next trend, technology or economic turning point, he looks for behaviours that have remained remarkably consistent across very different periods of history. The result is a book about risk and opportunity, but also patience, expectations, incentives and the stories people tell themselves when circumstances change. Its short, idea-driven chapters make it easy to read, but many of the questions it raises stay with you considerably longer.
