Editor's Note

Jill Tomlinson had a wonderful talent for imagining the world from an animal's point of view. Her characters may be owls, penguins, cats or other creatures, but the questions they face will feel immediately familiar to children: What happens when I am frightened? What if I cannot do something yet? How do I find my place in the world? The adventures are funny and gentle, but beneath them sit stories about confidence, curiosity, friendship and growing up. That combination has helped Tomlinson's animal tales remain favourites across generations. Children come for the animals and adventures; they stay for characters whose worries, discoveries and small triumphs feel surprisingly close to their own.

Why We Selected This Collection

Because animal stories can give children a wonderfully safe way to explore very human feelings. We selected Jill Tomlinson's Favourite Animal Tales for the warmth and humour with which these stories approach confidence, independence, curiosity and overcoming fears. Each adventure introduces a different animal personality and a new world to discover, making the collection varied while retaining the gentle storytelling that connects Tomlinson's books. With seven stories together, this set is particularly lovely for children beginning to develop favourite authors and characters — one adventure can easily lead to another.
