Editor's Note
Bedtime has arrived. Pigeon, however, has other plans. In Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!, Mo Willems takes one of the most familiar negotiations between children and grown-ups and hands it directly to the reader. Pigeon insists that he is not tired and produces one excuse after another for staying awake just a little longer. The yawns may be getting bigger, but so are the arguments. With wonderfully expressive illustrations and perfectly timed dialogue, Willems captures the determination of a child who is clearly exhausted but absolutely unwilling to admit it. It is a bedtime story about avoiding bedtime — which is precisely what makes it so much fun to read before bed.
Because almost every family knows the phrase “I'm not tired.” We selected Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! because it transforms a familiar bedtime struggle into something children and adults can laugh about together. Rather than explaining why children need sleep, the story lets Pigeon demonstrate just how inventive someone can become when they are determined not to go to bed. It also gives young readers the entertaining role of being the sensible one. This time, they get to recognise all the excuses, spot the yawns and decide whether Pigeon really should be allowed to stay awake. Funny, interactive and wonderfully familiar, it is an especially fitting choice for the bedtime bookshelf.
